About Basketball Australia

Basketball Australia (BA) is the governing body for the Sport of Basketball in Australia and is responsible for leading its Elite and High-Performance program and National Teams. BA also has responsibility for the Centre of Excellence (based at the AIS), the WNBL, National Wheelchair Basketball League, National Junior championships and grassroots and participation via Aussie Hoops – its junior game development program.

The popularity of Basketball in Australia continues to grow each year with a resurgent Hungry Jack’s NBL and Chemist Warehouse WNBL, and a record number of Australians playing in the NBA, WNBA and across global competitions and the American college system. Australia is recognised as one of the elite nations on the world stage with the Opals and Boomers currently ranked No. 2 and 3 in the FIBA World Rankings.

Basketball is the game of choice for over one million Australians and enjoys one of the highest participation and largest fan base of any national sport in Australia.  As stewards of the game, BA is committed to further growing the sport by ensuring it becomes even more accessible to Australians of all ages, genders, abilities, backgrounds, and skill levels.

The Role

Basketball Australia seek a CEO to guide the organisation through its 2021-2024 Strategy building upon the foundations for success into the future. Crucially this period includes the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in July 2021 (and their review), and the FIBA Women’s World Cup to be held in Australia in September 2022, both creating increased profile for the sport.

The CEO will bring inspirational leadership, renewal and innovation for Basketball, creating a clear vision and direction that ensures the effective delivery of strategic and operational plans. The CEO will deliver on KPI’s across three key areas:

  • Commercial growth
  • Participation growth
  • Increased profile and exceptional performance of BAs National Teams

Key Accountabilities

BA has approximately 40 staff who are located in Melbourne (Head Office) and Canberra (Centre of Excellence).  In addition, there are part time and contract staff for 14 national teams. The organisation has a budget of circa $23M AUD in 2021.

Priorities

Key immediate priorities include:

  1. Leading the development of a comprehensive commercial strategy to attract new commercial partners and improve the financial performance of BA.
  2. Deliver on key national projects, including implementation of a National Registration System for all participants.
  3. Development of new forms of content (broadcast, events, social media) to drive engagement and commercialisation opportunities.
  4. Review, renewal, and leadership of key national participation programs including Aussie Hoops to provide consistency in delivery, growth in participation and improved commercial outcomes.

Person Specification

 An ambassador for the Sport, you will be ambitious for Basketball in Australia and committed to providing strong foundations for the long-term growth and success of Basketball.

  • An inspiring and respected leader of the organisation and its staff. You will have the ability to operate across a complex stakeholder management environment and to build consensus on strategy and direction.
  • Creative, innovative and strategic. A proven track record for effective transformation, team management and results-driven leadership.
  • Commercial in analysing, realising and then capitalising on opportunities and finding innovative solutions to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Superior communication skills and able to network and collaborate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Experience working effectively and collaboratively with volunteers, service oriented and with a strong sense of customer and engagement.
  • Ability to be ‘hands on’ in delivery and strategic in approach. Decisive and able to prioritise and make sound judgement calls.
  • Knowledge of Basketball / Sport environment will be advantageous.
