BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT

Netball holds a unique position in the Australian sporting landscape. It is a sport with significant and long held participation rates that are the envy of many other Australian sports. It is widely held to be the women’s sport in Australia.
In fact, eight out of ten Australian families have had some involvement with netball; either through playing, volunteering, coaching or assisting in the administration of the sport.

Netball Australia is the national body for Netball in Australia. Their vision is that every Australian value’s their connection with Netball.

In recent times Netball in Australia has gone through extensive change in its position as a leading sport in the country. The profile and investment in women’s sport codes has never been greater and Netball’s aim is to balance its historical amateur status with the full professionalism of its athletes.

The sport continues to be supported by Sport Australia, and Netball is primed to leverage its key commercial products of Suncorp Super Netball, Suncorp NetSetGO and the Samsung Australian Diamonds.

To ensure Netball Australia continues to deliver on its many strategic priorities, the organisation’s emphasis is on growing the underlying business, while working to realise the untapped value in its asset portfolio. To achieve this, it seeks an Executive General Manager – Sport (EGM Sport) to focus on participation growth and how they effectively engage and communicate with their consumers, community and stakeholders.

ROLE PURPOSE

Executive General Manager — Sport
Reporting to the CEO the role will be responsible for developing and driving the sport’s strategic agenda to increase participation in netball and to support Member Organisations, Associations and Clubs to deliver amazing netball experiences.
The role of EGM Sport is highly collaborative, with a strong focus on fostering productive stakeholder relationships.

The strategic focus will be on participation growth through a nationally-driven participation strategy, Suncorp NetSetGO and schools, workforce (umpires and coaches) capability improvement, partnership management and the delivery of a range of national pathway and participation events (excluding Suncorp Super Netball).

The EGM Sport will contribute to ensuring the organisation achieves its business objectives faster, with less risk and at a lower cost or greater revenue by improving how the business systems operate and information is recognised, shared and acted upon.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Lead the development and support the implementation of Netball Australia’s National Participation Framework.
  • Be a subject matter expert in the design and recommendation of appropriate customer insight-led approaches that address participation growth and optimally configure the sport to achieve its strategic ambitions.
  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure the growth and management of Netball participation by relevant stakeholders is focused on growing the game’s footprint and participation base among current and prospective customers, ensuring that contemporary resources are deployed to underpin sustainable growth.
  • Lead change management initiatives that support the continuing improvement and growth of existing participation programs.
  • Lead and manage identified major strategic Sport Pillar projects as required, ensuring cross business integration is achieved to support successful outcomes.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of other whole-of business major projects in line with inherent expertise and to foster collaborative, agile ways of working.
  • Provide strategic leadership for the successful negotiation and delivery by staff and partners of identified international, pathway and community Netball events and competitions.
  • Be responsible for staff members adhering to policy and managing programs effectively.
  • Provide sound recommendations to the CEO regarding participation growth needs and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Represent Netball Australia in a range of external forums including with government, corporate partners, and in community initiatives.

Netball is recognised globally for high performance and enjoys levels of participation, brand satisfaction and awareness that place it in the top tier of Australian sport. In addition to a diverse range of ways to play and be involved in the game, the sport boasts an elite national competition that is enjoying exceptional viewing figures across traditional and new media.

The EGM Sport must bring a future focused approach to the best practice delivery of the sport. Netball Australia is seeking an individual who will bring contemporary thinking and an entrepreneurial spirit to the organisation. The emphasis will be on leveraging customer segmentation, research and data to gain a better sense of the Netball consumer and enhance communications with them, whilst reengineering the traditional elements of sport into digital based products.

Netball Australia is seeking applicants that possess the following competencies and expertise:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Australian sport sector and its overlap with other relevant sectors including education and health.
  • Drives innovation, promotes data-driven decision making and demonstrates evidence of successfully implementing customer segmentation and research strategies.
  • Brings excellent leadership qualities with an ability to coach and motivate a team, with a passion for getting the best out of people.
  • Understanding of contemporary digital technologies and how they power outstanding B2B and B2C experiences.
  • Proven success at delivering against strategic objectives and driving growth.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and driving the implementation of participation/ customer growth strategies in a commercial environment.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and the capability to achieve successful outcomes through astute negotiation.
  • Project management skills with an understanding of the project management cycle.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of strategic planning and a track record of achieving agreed strategic outcomes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial management and budgeting.
  • Experience in budget interpretation and an understanding of contract management, managing successful relationship with partners and funding entities including government agencies.
  • Strong understanding of human resource management, OH&S, Equal Opportunity and other legislation relating to the position.
  • Degree or higher qualification/s in Business, Technology, Sport, Marketing or a related field.
