General Manager – Deakin Melbourne Boomers

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers (DMB) aspire to be a leading force in the Melbourne and Australian sporting landscape, pursuing excellence and dedicated to the empowerment and promotion of women’s sport.

They do so by:

With a clear three year plan, the Club has undertaken extensive change; repositioning the organisation with the Victorian Basketball community, the Victorian government and also with corporate partners. Revenues for the Club have more than doubled over this period to exceed $1 million annually and the internal team is in excess of 50 individuals (players, staff, contractors, Board, key volunteers, etc). Over the last three seasons the Club has been central to a rejuvenation in the WNBL which is broadcast nationally on Fox Sports and SBS.

The Club now seek a General Manager to lead the organisation through the next stage of development and growth. This is a truly exciting time for the Club, following substantial growth over the past three years in both the fan base and the sponsor group, as well as significant success on the court.  This includes a $107 million upgrade of the State Basketball Centre funded by the State Government and City of Knox with DMB one of the key tenants in this redevelopment project.

The General Manager role is a highly visible leadership position. Whilst it is a strategic and advocacy position, it is also ‘hands-on’, with the delivery of commercial opportunities and leading a small team across Marketing, Operational and Match-Day.

The Board has an ambitious vision for the organisation over the next 3 – 10 years. There is a genuine opportunity to be a powerful influence on the sport of basketball and women’s sport in general, nationally and internationally. This level of influence will need to be underpinned by tangible business success.

The Board will appoint a person who can be advocate for the organisation whilst also driving sustainable profitability.  The ideal person will understand the factors that drive sustained success, both financial, operational and reputational.  This is a great development opportunity for an individual to build on or elevate their career in to a General Management level, with the support of an influential and diverse board.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leadership and strategic management
  • Client and stakeholder management
  • Development and leadership of the Boomers off-court team
  • Board engagement and delivery of board and chair reporting
  • Working effectively with the community of stakeholders such as corporate partners, associations and government.

Success will result from an emphasis on the foundations of business strategy, people and operational processes. This blend of pragmatic process and strategy centred around leadership and highly effective communication skills will enable the General Manager to drive a successful business that helps the on-court team express its brilliance.

The role will demand:

  • A deep and broad base of general management skills especially business acumen, a hunger for commercial results and a good sense of customer, brand, marketing and community.
  • Credibility and gravitas as an advocate for the organisation, with unwavering commitment for the development and growth of women’s basketball and women’s sport.
  • An engaging, impactful leader and communicator, whilst being ‘hands-on’ in operational delivery.
  • Diplomacy and collaboration in all dealings with internal and external stakeholders.

Sport is a seasonal business, which means the successful candidate must be able to demonstrate specific attributes. The key is the capacity to sustain a strategic outlook in the heat of the season, whilst paying close attention to the business in the off-season.   This is not unique to basketball, but it does mean that it will be advantageous to have operated in a professional sports organisation or related professional sports environment.
