Athletics Australia (AA) is the governing body for Athletics in this country. Athletics sits at the very centre of Australian Sporting and Olympic heritage.

AA is responsible for all athletics activity including high performance, participation, coaching, officiating, juniors, para-athletics, domestic and international competition. Athletics Australia has a critical role in leading, fostering and encouraging participation in athletics in Australia and promoting excellence in performance.

AA’s key stakeholders and partners are the State and Territory Athletics Associations, but also Little Athletics and Masters Athletics. The National Governing Body has very strong relationships with Sport Australia, the Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia and Commonwealth Games Australia.

With a pedigree Board and an innovative and progressive Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Athletics Australia seek a GM Finance who can continue the AA tradition of excellence in governance and who will lead on all matters of Finance, Administration and a range of ad hoc projects for the CEO and Board.

The role

The GM Finance will be responsible for leading all aspects of the finance, operations and governance functions of the organisation. This is a senior leadership role reporting to the CEO and forming part of AA’s Leadership Team. This role provides high level strategic advice, leadership and direction to ensure AA is delivering its goals and objectives, with particular focus on financial planning & management, operating systems and structures, and ensuring best practice governance arrangements.
Responsibilities will include;

  • Prepare effective and timely financial reports to the Board, executive and business unit managers;
  • Develop, implement and monitor effective financial systems, controls, policies and procedures;
  • Manage the development of, and monitor progress against, short and long-term financial budgets;
  • Coordinate and support AA’s Audit & Risk Committee to ensure the Committee is able to function in a professional, effective and timely manner;
  • Manage the annual audit, and ensure compliance with financial and corporate legislation and standards;
  • Provide financial input to the development of business cases and activities to ensure all plans are underpinned by robust financial analysis;
  • Liaise with key stakeholders such as the Sport Australia on financial issues;
  • Ensure the timely lodgement of all financial reports including with ASIC, Sport Australia and the ATO;
  • Manage and mentor AA’s finance staff and improve the awareness and understanding of financial issues within the organisation generally.
  • Develop, implement and monitor effective finance systems and structures that support the delivery of AA’s business and objectives;
  • Provide regular support to the CEO on key strategic initiatives;
  • Liaise with key stakeholders including State Associations on relevant matters involving finance, administration, operations and governance;

Knowledge & Experience

The GM Finance must embody a culture of robust Financial Control. The successful candidate will be an individual that possesses drive, passion, initiative and enjoys thinking on their feet, working in a demanding environment and under pressure, who can work in a team environment, and is prepared to roll up their sleeves and work hands-on. The decisions made by the GM Finance will directly affect AA’s direction and success.

The role will require a strong and dynamic communicator and leader with well-developed interpersonal skills, including communication of issues to the CEO, Board and the Audit, Finance and Risk Committee. There is a clear expectation that the GM Finance will ensure communication is timely, free and open.

  • Hold a tertiary (or higher) level accounting qualification and be a current member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, CPA Australia or equivalent professional body;
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of financial management, compliance, and reporting systems/requirements;
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of operational arrangements, including governance frameworks, integrity frameworks and policies, risk, and operations systems and structures.
  • Have a demonstrated understanding of, and ability to influence stakeholders within, the complex sporting environment;
  • Effectively interpret, analyse and present strategic and financial information to facilitate decision making;
  • Be able to operate within a complex organisation comprising multiple constituencies and stakeholders including communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills;
  • Have an extensive knowledge of operational, administration and human resource policies, processes and systems;
  • Be proficient in accounting packages;
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint);
  • Be an effective communicator and negotiator;
  • Be able to work collaboratively within a small, dynamic team; and
  • Have strong attention to detail and an outstanding work ethic.
