National Sales Director – Sydney (preferred) or Melbourne

IRONMAN Oceania is the largest operator of mass participation sports in the region with more than 200,000 participants annually. Beginning as a single race in 1978, the iconic the IRONMAN® brand and its athletes have proven that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE® by crossing finish lines around the world.

The Position

This role reports directly into the Senior Director, Global Partnership, Oceania and has four direct reports – Partnership Sales Manager in Sydney, Partnerships Sales Manager, Expo Sales Manager and Market Research & Sponsorship Analyst in Melbourne.

The role will also have a strong working relationship with the NZ Sales Director and the National Account Director.

The role is located at IRONMAN’S Sydney Office (or Melbourne) and may be required from time to time to work from different locations as required and to attend events.

Scope of Role

IRONMAN Oceania develops, owns and manages mass participation endurance sporting events throughout the Oceania Region.

You will be responsible for developing strategies, planning and implementation along with managing the Australian Sales team in driving and selling commercial programs, the programs will include event sponsorship, contra opportunities and other activities that increase the profitability of all IRONMAN events. This is a dynamic and unique opportunity to join an ever-evolving business.

Key responsibilities of this role include, but not limited to;

  • Work with the Senior Director, Global Partnership in setting budgets, targets and overall commercial strategy for the department
  • Creating strategies to obtain new clients (and renew existing clients) while generating revenue opportunities
  • Manage the Australia Partnership Sales team, ensuring adequate pipeline, sales presentations, proposals and sales targets are set, met and overachieved
  • Develop your own pipeline, proposals and close new business opportunities across the IRONMAN portfolios
  • Taking a lead role in the ongoing sales direction, strategy and focus for individual Event business units as directed e.g. running events; or triathlon events etc.
  • Developing and assisting with the improvement of ‘best practice’ across sales presentations and pitches (which requires understanding and implementation of compelling, factual, tailored documents and multimedia presentations)
  • Developing a meaningful presence and understanding of the corporate sponsorship landscape and spend
  • Develop strong national corporate relationships ensuring on going networking and referrals for the development of the overall IRONMAN pipeline
  • Liaison with multiple departments, ensuring execution of sponsorship programs

Skills & Experience Required

As our preferred candidate, you will have:

  • Significant experience in a sales/business development role (minimum five years) with experience in sales strategy, implementation and success in closing sales
  • Existing national network of prospective commercial partners across a variety of industries
  • Demonstrated ability to sell to and exceed set financial targets
  • Experience in managing multi layered stakeholders with significant relationship management
  • Managed dynamic sales team(s)
  • Contribute to productivity and positive team morale
    Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and revenue targets with high attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure and within deadlines
  • Ability to travel and work on events at weekends
  • A background in events or sports industry is desirable.
