Board Member / Non-Executive Directors, Stadiums Tasmania

Introduction

The Tasmanian Government is now seeking expressions of interest for the inaugural Board of Stadiums Tasmania.

The Chairperson will possess proven leadership skills to oversee the full establishment of this new statutory authority, set its strategic direction and facilitate a smooth change management process to ensure its effective operation.

The Board

It is anticipated the inaugural Chairperson will be joined by four-six Board Members / Non-Executive Directors. Members of the Board are expected to actively support the Chairperson to provide strategic direction and effective oversight of Stadiums Tasmania. A key objective is to ensure management continuously strives to improve performance and manage risk.

The Board will work with the Chairperson, and management to ensure Stadiums Tasmania conducts its affairs in a manner that is in accordance with sound statutory and commercial practice, conforms with relevant laws and aligns with the statement of expectations. The challenge for the Board is to develop Stadiums Tasmania’s culture and values to grow the business and maintains a focus on customer satisfaction.

Through the Chairperson, open and transparent communication is expected to exist between the Board and Stadium Tasmania’s management, relevant State Government Ministers and Senior Officers, through regular contact and performance reporting.

The successful individuals will have proven experience of contributing at a Board level or managing an Authority offering immediate credibility and gravitas. Experience of working in collaboration with multiple stakeholders and a passion for customer excellence and the sport / arts / events / entertainment industries will be critical. The successful candidates will need to demonstrate how their skills and experience can help Stadiums Tasmania develop into the future.

Financial viability and growth coming out of the pandemic are critical and the Board will need to ensure a strong commercial model is in place to deliver the strategy. In addition, the Board must be able to provide non-executive guidance on how to work collaboratively with Stadium Tasmania’s key stakeholders to ensure State-wide solutions to opportunities and challenges. Experience managing complex, multi stakeholder change management projects will be advantageous

Attributes required by the Board

The Board is to comprise members with a range of skills, experience, qualifications, expertise as defined in the Act, and vision to enable it to fulfil its responsibilities to establish and oversee an effective organisation.

Expertise in a Board environment of similar structure and complexity, along with the ability to add value and contribute positively to informed Board decision making and oversight is an essential characteristic of all Board members.

In making an appointment under Section 8 of the Act, the Minister is to ensure the Chairperson and the Board Members, collectively, have expertise relevant experience in, or including expert knowledge of, most of the following matters:

  • Business and financial management;
  • Communications, marketing and sponsorship;
  • Infrastructure development, delivery and asset management;
  • Legal, corporate governance and risk management;
  • Major event management and operation;
  • Management of major stadiums and venues; and/or
  • Sports administration or high-performance sport at a senior level.

Member or Fellows of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (MAICD or FAICD) are preferred.

Personal Qualities  

The following personal qualities are required for the Board:

  • a reputation for high personal and professional integrity;
  • sound and independent judgement;
  • strong business or public administration acumen;
  • a genuine interest in the organisation, its business and people;
  • exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work with others;
  • strong public speaking, presentation and influencing skills; and
  • high-level business and community networks.
