Director of Talent Development – Tennis Australia

As a result of an extensive review in Participation and Performance, Tennis Australia started with the hiring of a Chief Tennis Officer that brought these two strategic pillars together. This has enabled a ‘Grassroots through to Grand Slams’ strategy to focus on creating greater connectivity across the whole game, from participation to high performance.

Further results have seen the separation of Director of Professional Tennis and Director of Talent Development, both reporting into the CTO. The Director of Talent Development will be responsible for the creation of a national framework that will drive scale in Tennis Australia’s (TA) ambition to foster opportunities for talented players to maximise their potential. The position will lead a remote team in the local interpretation of this framework, that will ultimately see Tennis collaborating with numerous stakeholders in delivering tailored development opportunities for athletes across the country.

With a primary remit to identify, develop and retain the best tennis talent in Australia, core to the success of this key leadership position will be the connection between growth ambitions in junior participation and the development of international players that will inspire Australians to choose Tennis.

Success will be achieved by driving talent management and development strategies, along with tools, processes and programs designed to support the performance management, progression, talent assessment, coaching, development planning and competency identification aligned with the Tennis pathway strategy.

The position will demand exceptional strategic, leadership and stakeholder management skills. The role will:

  • Create and implement the talent development strategic framework in consultation with the CTO
  • Lead a large scale national team that will be charged with driving local opportunities for players to maximise their potential
  • Develop and maintain relations with key stakeholders to advance tennis’ growth opportunities
  • Work in partnership with the stakeholders across the Professional Game, Coaching, Wellbeing & Inclusion, as well as our state bodies, to ensure that the talent pathway is achieving optimal outcomes
  • Stay abreast of global talent ID and development trends to ensure we stay ahead in the game
  • Foster a culture of wellbeing and inclusion across the development pathway
  • Provide clear strategic direction and development opportunities for your team to drive a high performance culture

The successful candidate will have a track record in developing strategic frameworks and driving innovative, performance-impacting solutions within High Performance Sport. They will have experience in navigating a complex stakeholder environment and demonstrate high level leadership & influencing skills. More specifically, the successful candidate will bring:

  • Proven ability to develop and implement a talent development program at scale
  • Previous experience in identifying and developing talented young athletes
  • High level of emotional intelligence and a proven ability to build professional relationships all levels
  • Experience professionally leading large remote teams
  • Proven knowledge of all aspects of development (technical, tactical, physical and psychological)
  • Tertiary qualification in Physical Education, Sport Science, Human Movement or equivalent is desirable. Tennis experience is also desirable, but not mandatory
  • An alignment with the Tennis values of Excellence, Humility, Loyalty and Teamwork
  • Preparedness to be flexible in regard to working hours and travel as required
  • Willingness to obtain a Working with Children Check & National Police Check
